Even and uneven gears are distributed on two power trains, each with its own clutch. When one gear is disengaged, the next is already engaged. This minimises shift times but maximises precision. It means no jolting and no interruption in traction, regardless of whether you are in automatic mode or manual gear-change via the paddle switches on the steering wheel or the gear lever.
Thanks to the continuous power transmission to the two rear wheels, the BMW 1 Series Convertible achieves acceleration figures approaching those of a sports car, and the sprint from 0 to 100 km/h is over in only 5.5 seconds.
